Watch Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants Live HD Streaming Online

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Tim Lincecum emerged as the most dominant pitcher in the National League in his first two full major league seasons. Back-to-back NL Cy Young Awards. Two All-Star selections, 526 strikeouts. All by the age of 25.
This year was bumpy.

Now, the 16-game winner for the San Francisco Giants gets to take the ball for his most important start yet: Game 1 of the division series against the wild-card Atlanta Braves on Thursday night at AT&T Park.

Proven postseason veteran Derek Lowe (16-12) will go for the Braves, who reached the playoffs with a dramatic 8-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on the season’s final day to extend manager Bobby Cox’s farewell season.

“He’s a lot different pitcher right now than he was in the first half of the season,” Cox said of Lowe. “He was good in the first half. He’s even better now.”

It took big performances by Lincecum’s supporting cast to get the Giants back to the playoffs after a six-year absence. They won the NL West despite enduring a career-worst five-start losing streak by their ace in August. Lincecum came through over the final month and hopes to carry that momentum into his playoff debut.

“Things got a little bit more crucial,” Lincecum said Wednesday of his successful September. “I went through more of a hectic period in my career. Obviously that rough month made me want to turn things around, just do something different. Just changing my between-starts routine, going a little bit harder and doing a little bit more conditioning.”

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy knows Cox will be prepared for anything and everything. The 69-year-old Cox is retiring after the season. He led Atlanta to 14 straight division titles before this recent four-year drought.

“I revere this guy so much with what he’s done and what he’s accomplished,” Bochy said. “It’s going to be good to see him, I will say that. I do know that you have to play your best ball to beat this team. You’re not going to surprise Bobby. He’s a great manager.”

These teams have taken similar paths to this point, each getting through playoff-like games for most of September. That’s why this series doesn’t feel much different to Cox, even if he’s back in the postseason for the first time in five years.

Neither team planned to finalize its roster until Thursday morning’s deadline, though Bochy said outfielder Aaron Rowand made the team. Left-hander Barry Zito—the team’s highest-paid player making $18.5 million this year—was told he’s not in the rotation, but he said he didn’t know if he’d make the roster as a reliever.

At 91-71, the Braves finished with one fewer win than the Giants. Both teams played catch up in September, with Atlanta losing the NL East to the defending league champion Phillies. San Francisco also clinched in Game 162.

The Braves won a majors-best 25 games in their final at-bat.

“That’s how we got here to be honest with you,” Cox said. “We’ve been through these playoffs the last three weeks. Every game is a must-win game. The Giants went through exactly the same thing.”

Lowe won his last five regular-season starts. The right-hander will make his 11th career playoff start and 22nd appearance.

“It’s something I’ve always enjoyed, pitching in big games,” Lowe said. “The Giants really don’t care about my past.”

Lincecum finished his up-and-down year by winning five of his last six starts following the skid. He beat the Braves way back on April 11 in his second start of the year, then lost on the road Aug. 5. Atlanta catcher Brian McCann has been one of several Braves to regularly hit Lincecum, going 8 for 21 with a home run and three doubles against the hard-throwing righty.

There’s thought some hitters have begun figuring him out.

“If you look at from when he got drafted, through the minors and all the way up to this point, he’s always been just a power pitcher and going out there on pure ability, pure talent,” Giants reliever Sergio Romo said of Lincecum. “The last couple years, he’s having success as a complete pitcher, showing he does have more than unbelievable talent. He has it upstairs, he has work ethic. Everyone goes through their slumps. You’d expect a pitcher of his caliber to be able to bounce back as well as he has. He definitely came out a bigger, better guy upstairs. It’s pretty cool.”

All the numbers and matchups mean little now. The Braves are playing to extend their special year for Cox. Like Atlanta, the Giants made it this far without a superstar like their old Barry Bonds-led teams.

“This year we made every effort to put together the best team we could and do everything we could to improve on last year’s record and be contenders all through the season,” said second-year San Francisco managing partner Bill Neukom. “So far so good is all you can say.”

Lincecum’s funk was the first prolonged rough stretch of his career. It wore on him mentally, but he finally worked out of it. Bochy has said Lincecum has emerged a better pitcher because of his struggles, which the 10th overall draft pick in 2006 never experienced in his days at the University of Washington or in a brief minor league career.

Lincecum’s losing streak began with that start at Atlanta. Cox knows that’s all a thing of the past.

“What’s a bad month for him?” Cox joked. “He’s tough. He’s as good a pitcher as you ever want to see.”

Lincecum’s unorthodox delivery and quirks—he doesn’t ice his arm after starts—have earned him nicknames such as the “Franchise” and “Freak” along the way.

Lincecum certainly has grown up this year, starting from his offseason marijuana bust back home in Washington state and through his lows of August.

“He’s ready,” third baseman Pablo Sandoval said. “I think he’s going to win everything right now. It’s the right moment. He’ll get focused. You’ve got good and bad moments in the season, and you just go out and do your job.”  WATCH LIVE ONLINE Give it a try >>> Watch Live Online

Watch New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins Live HD Streaming Online

Andy Pettitte is the winningest postseason pitcher in major league history, but for the first time there may be some apprehension as he heads to the mound for the New York Yankees in this year’s playoffs.

Pettitte, who recently returned from a long stint on the disabled list, looks to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the AL division series when he faces former teammate Carl Pavano and the Minnesota Twins on Thursday at Target Field.
Pettitte (11-3, 3.28 ERA) improved to 18-9 with a 3.90 ERA in 40 career playoff starts after going 4-0 with a 3.52 ERA in five games last season en route to New York’s 27th World Series title. That included a 4-1 win over Pavano and the Twins in Game 3 of the ALDS in which the left-hander allowed a run and three hits with seven strikeouts in 6 1-3 innings.

However, concerns are lingering about Pettitte’s health. He returned from the disabled list in mid-September after missing two months with a strained left groin, and was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts, allowing 19 hits in 7 1-3 innings over the last two outings against arch-rival Boston.

Although those numbers might be cause for concern with any other pitcher, manager Joe Girardi feels confident about sending Pettitte to the mound with a chance for the Yankees to take a 2-0 series lead back to the Bronx for Game 3 on Saturday.

“I feel pretty good about it,” Girardi told the Yankees’ official website. “He said he felt really good about his bullpen (session) Monday. That makes me feel better.”

Girardi is counting on Pettitte’s experience in October to make a difference, but his success against Minnesota hasn’t been limited to the postseason. Pettitte defeated the Twins twice in 2010, giving up two runs over 14 1-3 innings, and has gone 8-0 with a 2.54 ERA in his last nine starts against them with two playoff victories.

Pettitte gets the call after the Yankees rallied for a 6-4 win in Game 1 on Wednesday. Francisco Liriano pitched five scoreless innings as Minnesota took a 3-0 lead, but New York scored four runs in the sixth—including a two-run triple by Curtis Granderson—and Mark Teixeira hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh off loser Jesse Crain.

“Our lineup is so deep, there’s never a reason to give up,” Teixeira said. “There’s some teams where maybe two or three guys carry the team and if you’re in a big hole it’s tough to get out of. But with our lineup, we can be down four, five, six runs and still have a chance to score seven or eight. We just haven’t given up all year.”

The Yankees are 10-2 in postseason play against the Twins, including 6-0 in Minneapolis.

Minnesota, which hasn’t won a playoff series since 2002, went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. Joe Mauer, the 2009 AL MVP, was 1 for 5 with two strikeouts.

The Twins have blown leads in their last four postseason losses to the Yankees, and now face the tough task of trying to be the first team since the 2005 Los Angeles Angels to advance after losing a first-round opener at home.

“We’ve got to get back up on our feet,” second baseman Orlando Hudson said. “There’s no need for us to sit here and talk about it. This isn’t the Twins’ curse versus the Yankees. It’s a new year. Hey, we’ve still got to battle.”

Pavano (17-11, 3.75) will try to help the Twins head to New York with a split as he comes off an outstanding regular season.

The right-hander recorded his most victories in a season since 2004 with Florida, but still faces questions about his disastrous time with the Yankees. Pavano signed a $39.95 million contract with New York in 2005, but he won just nine games and made only 26 starts over four seasons due to injuries.

“And I did get to put on a Yankees uniform, which as a kid, that is something I dreamed about,” said Pavano, a Connecticut native. “So that was definitely fun. But it is definitely overshadowed by some of the things that went on that I didn’t enjoy as far as injuries and stuff. But that’s all in the past. What are you going to do?”

Pavano’s only two postseason wins came as a reliever in 2003 when Florida went on to beat New York in the World Series. He didn’t face the Yankees this year. WATCH LIVE ONLINE Give it a try >>> Watch Live Online

Watch Texas Rangers at Tampa Bay Rays Live HD Streaming Online

The Texas Rangers are the only team in the majors never to win a playoff series, but if Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Rays is any indication, that may be about to change.

The AL West champions can return home with a 2-0 lead in their division series if they capture Thursday afternoon’s game at Tropicana Field, where the Rays hope struggling starter James Shields will help them avoid a daunting deficit.
The Rangers’ limited postseason history had been almost entirely negative before Wednesday, when ace Cliff Lee shut down the Rays for seven innings in a 5-1 victory.

The win was only the franchise’s second in the playoffs, and it snapped a nine-game postseason losing streak that came entirely against the New York Yankees in the 1990s.

“I guess whatever happens from this point on will be history in Texas Rangers folklore,” manager Ron Washington said. “I’m just happy my guys were relaxed and they were able to go out there and play the type of game that we know we can play.”

Nelson Cruz and Bengie Molina homered for Texas, with Molina totaling three hits and two RBIs to bolster a strong postseason resume. The catcher won a World Series with the Angels in 2002 and hit three homers in the 2005 division series to help Los Angeles beat the Yankees.

The Rays, meanwhile, were limited to four singles and two extra-base hits - both by Ben Zobrist, who homered in the seventh inning.

The AL East champions’ offense was also sluggish down the stretch, averaging 2.0 runs and getting shut out three times in the final eight games. All of those were without star third baseman Evan Longoria, who made an error and went 1 for 4 in his return from a quadriceps injury Wednesday.

“A lot of guys had pretty good at-bats, so I’m really not discouraged,” manager Joe Maddon said. “I’m actually encouraged. … I’m looking for a carryover into (Thursday).”

If they can’t get more production from their lineup, the Rays need Shields (13-15, 5.18 ERA) to quickly rebound from a surprisingly poor season.

Shields was the opening day starter, but he allowed an AL-high 34 homers while setting career highs in losses and ERA. The right-hander went 0-4 with a 7.59 ERA in his final six starts.

“The best attribute for a baseball player is amnesia,” Shields said. “I feel really good right now. I feel confident in my stuff, I feel confident in what I’m doing out there.”

Maddon may have tabbed Shields as the Game 2 starter due to his strong performance for the Rays in the 2008 playoffs.

Shields went 2-2 with a 2.88 ERA in four postseason starts, winning Game 1 of the division series against Chicago and beating Philadelphia with 5 2-3 shutout innings in Game 2 of the World Series.

“Having the experience of going through that in 2008 is definitely going to help me out and help my confidence out,” Shields said.

Not only does Texas’ C.J. Wilson (15-8, 3.35) lack any playoff experience, but this was his first full season as a starter in the majors.

The former closer was a revelation for the Rangers, leading the team in wins, innings and ERA among starters.

“When things go according to plan, everybody looks smart,” Wilson said. “I guess things went according to plan with the transition to starting. So everything is good.”

Wilson, however, has gone 1-3 with a 5.85 ERA since the start of September, prompting questions about his increased workload. Wilson’s 204 innings are 130 more than he threw in 2009.

The left-hander struggled in his lone start against the Rays this year, walking four and allowing five runs - three earned - in five innings, although he got plenty of run support in a 9-6 victory June 4 in Arlington. WATCH LIVE ONLINE Give it a try >>> Watch Live Online

Watch Kansas State Wildcats Vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers Live HD Streaming Online

Two opponents very familiar with one another meet in Manhattan, Kansas as the Kansas State Wildcats welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers to Bill Snyder Family Stadium for a Thursday Night ESPN game.

Bill Snyder's Kansas State Wildcats enter this one undefeated and with a 1-0 record in Big 12 play after beating Iowa State two games back at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. At first glance and before the season started the KSU schedule looked to be soft but as the season has progressed, their opponents they have already beaten have performed well against other teams. Kansas State's opening week victim UCLA went on to beat Texas in Austin and Iowa State knocked off Texas Tech, the Wildcats look to add a top ten ranked team to that list on their own in Nebraska. Carson Coffman has been reserved at the QB spot and while he has thrown five touchdowns against two interceptions this year, three of the TD passes came against FCS Missouri State as did 280 of his 639 yards he has throw for. The Wildcats offense is very straight forward, it revolves around Daniel Thomas who is among the best in the country. Thomas has already carried the ball 105 times for 628 yards and six touchdowns and he averages six yards a carry even though defenses key on him and everyone in the stadium knows he is going to get the ball the bulk of time as he had a 34 carries for 181 yards against Iowa State and 28 carries for 234 yards against UCLA. Aubrey Quarles showed good speed and Tremaine Thompson caught three passes in the comeback win against UCF but the receivers seem to just be there to try and keep opposing defenses honest. The Kansas State defense is allowing 19.8 points per game and 349.2 yards allowing 153.8 per game through the air and 195.5 on the ground. While they have looked vulnerable at times, the KSU defense has got it done when it counted, keeping their perfect record intact to this point.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers look to be back but before that can be made official, there are conference titles to win and beyond, as the bar has been set high in Lincoln. In the mean time the Huskers are off to a 4-0 start and this is their first Big 12 conference game of the year. Nebraska got off to a solid start by knocking off Western Kentucky easily and then got up big on Idaho at home before allowing the Vandals to score late to dress it up. Nebraska then went on the road to Washington where they put on one of the most impressive performances by anyone this season, blowing out the Washington Huskies and holding then Heisman Trophy candidate and front runner, Jake Locker, to just 71 yards passing while racking up 533 yards of their own. Freshman Taylor Martinez has been a force thus far this season and he was seven of 11 passing for 150 yards and a touchdown and he ran for another 137 yards and three touchdowns. Roy Helu and Rex Burkhead have been pouring it on as well with Helu rushing for 305 yards and four touchdowns while finding the endzone four times and Burkhead rushing for 304 yards and three scores. While the Nebraska offense is in good hands, this team will go as far as their defense takes them and by the looks of things, that has a chance to be pretty far. The Cornhuskers are allowing 12.8 points and 265 yards per game with 126.2 coming through the air and 138.8 yards coming on the ground. Jared Crick and Prince Amukamara could play anywhere and will be playing on Sunday in the future and Kicker/Punter Alex Henry is one of the best around. This will be the stiffest test for the Huskers thus far as they beat KSU 17-3 last season.

Kansas State is 4-0 against the spread following a game which they didn't cover, 6-1 against the spread in their last seven conference game, and 0-5 against the spread in their last five home games against a team with a winning record. Nebraska is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven road games against a team with a winning home record, 9-4 against the spread when playing a team with a winning record, and 5-1 against the spread in their last six Thursday games. Nebraska is 3-7 against the spread in the last 10 meetings and the road team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five games between these two.

This should be a solid game as teams who are familiar with one another like these two are means that it will come down to execution and depth and I think the Huskers have the edge there. While Daniel Thomas is one of the best around, Nebraska has the guys who can slow him down and with the Huskers having a cover guy like Amukamara, it takes away half of the field as an option to throw to. The Huskers just have too much. WATCH LIVE ONLINE Give it a try >>> Watch Live Online

Watch Chicago Blackhawks at Colorado Avalanche Live HD Streaming Online

Not long after celebrating the end of a 49-year title drought, the Chicago Blackhawks began feeling the weight of the NHL salary cap.

Whether the Blackhawks can become the first team in 12 seasons to repeat as Stanley Cup champions might depend on how wisely they managed their money.

With several key members gone and some newcomers joining its young core, Chicago opens its Cup defense against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night in Denver.
The Blackhawks ended nearly a half century of futility with Patrick Kane’s overtime goal in Philadelphia, but began saying goodbye to nearly half of their playoff roster just two weeks after parading with the Cup down Michigan Avenue.

As it sought to create cap space, Chicago started by dealing playoff hero Dustin Byfuglien to Atlanta on June 23. Among the Blackhawks’ other moves included trading former Calder Trophy finalist Kris Versteeg to Toronto, refusing to accept goaltender Antti Niemi’s $2.75 million arbitration award and assigning former starting netminder Cristobal Huet to the Swiss National League.

“We knew there were going to be some moves,” forward Troy Brouwer said. “We didn’t know maybe the extent of what it was going to be. We can’t worry about it any more. What we have to do now is defend the Stanley Cup.”

With Niemi and Huet gone, former Dallas stalwart Marty Turco was signed to a one-year contract Aug. 2. The three-time All-Star is coming off two of his worst seasons - a 55-51-21 record and a combined 2.78 goals-against average - but could bounce back with a better supporting cast.

“My game is all right, but in my head there’s just some fine-tuning,” Turco said.

That support includes 23-year-old defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, whose four-year, $14 million offer sheet from San Jose was matched July 12. He joins a group of highly regarded young players that includes Kane, Conn Smythe-winning captain Jonathan Toews, reigning Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith and fellow defenseman Brent Seabrook.

“You look at our team and we lost a lot of guys,” Kane said. “But at the same time you still have those core guys who have been here for a while.”

Four-time All-Star Marian Hossa, Dave Bolland and Tomas Kopecky also return for coach Joel Quenneville, who signed a three-year contract extension last month. Quenneville could get scoring help from Viktor Stalberg, former first-round draft pick Jack Skille and Fernando Pisani in his team’s attempt to become the first repeat Cup winner since Detroit in 1997 and 1998.

Chicago, however, won’t have defenseman Brian Campbell on the ice for at least four weeks because of a sprained right knee. The Blackhawks could look to 19-year-old Nick Leddy, a former first-round draft pick of Minnesota, to take over Campbell’s role.

The Avalanche, meanwhile, will likely have Matt Duchene back from illness for the opener. In 2009-10, the Calder finalist led all rookies with 55 points and finished tied for first with 24 goals.

Duchene is part of a roster that’s stayed virtually intact after the franchise’s 12th playoff appearance in its 14 seasons since moving from Quebec.

The most recent trip came under first-year coach Joe Sacco, and ended with a first-round defeat in six games to San Jose capped by three straight losses. Still, Colorado’s postseason appearance may have been the most unexpected as it came off a Western Conference-worst 69-point campaign.

The Avalanche had as many as 10 rookies on their roster last season while finishing eighth in the West with 95 points. Those first-year players combined for 64 goals and 102 assists.

“I think we should be good (this season). We’re still a young team and we have a year together under our belts, so I don’t see why we can’t compete with anyone,” center Ryan O’Reilly told the team’s website.

Craig Anderson is back in net after starting 71 games during his first season in Colorado, 44 more than his previous career best. The former Blackhawk and Park Ridge, Ill., native was 38-25-7 with a 2.64 goals-against average and seven shutouts.

Paul Stastny also returns after posting a team-leading and career-best 79 points last season. Chris Stewart led the Avalanche with 28 goals, including five game-winners.

The Blackhawks were 3-0-1 last season against Colorado with two wins coming in shootouts. WATCH LIVE ONLINE Give it a try >>> Watch Live Online

Watch Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs Live HD Streaming Online

The Montreal Canadiens traded the most important player from their surprise run to the Eastern Conference finals, and they may return to the ice without Jaroslav Halak’s replacement as well as the NHL’s top postseason scorer.

They won’t find much sympathy from the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are still trying to end the longest playoff drought in franchise history.

The league’s oldest rivals both face plenty of uncertainty as they open the season Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre, where Montreal will likely be lacking both Carey Price and Michael Cammalleri.
Although the Canadiens (39-33-10) barely qualified for the postseason as the East’s No. 8 seed last season, they shocked top-seeded Washington and reigning champion Pittsburgh - both in seven games - before losing to Philadelphia in the conference finals.

The biggest factor for Montreal was the play of Halak, whose .923 save percentage in the playoffs was tops in the league and included more than 40 saves in three of the wins against the Capitals. The Canadiens, however, dealt him to St. Louis for young forwards Lars Eller and Ian Schultz in the offseason.

Instead of Halak, general manager Pierre Gauthier chose the 23-year-old Price to carry the load in net. Price was the No. 5 overall draft pick in 2005, but he finished an unsteady 2009-10 season with a 13-20-5 record and drew jeers during some poor preseason performances.

“We all appreciate what Jaro did and the player he was for us,” Cammalleri said, “but I’ll flip that coin real quick and tell you that we’re excited about Carey’s opportunity. We have a lot of confidence in Carey Price.”

Price, however, may have to wait to make an impact. He’s likely to miss the opener with the flu, leaving newcomer Alex Auld to start.

Cammalleri, the 2010 playoff leader with 13 goals, is also out as he serves a one-game suspension for an illegal slash during the preseason. Plus, defenseman Andrei Markov remains sidelined following knee surgery.

Still, much of Montreal’s core remains relatively unchanged following Gauthier’s first offseason, including coach Jacques Martin and top centers Tomas Plekanec and Scott Gomez.

The Canadiens have a new on-ice leader in Brian Gionta, who led Montreal with 28 goals during the 2009-10 regular season. Gionta was named the second American captain in franchise history last week.

“It’s obviously quite an honor,” Gionta said. “I’m real excited about it. … I don’t think things will change too much. You guys saw what it was all about last year. I’m more a leader by example.”

The Maple Leafs (30-38-14) also have a new captain in defenseman Dion Phaneuf, who fills a post that had been vacant since the 2008 departure of Mats Sundin.

Phaneuf, acquired from Calgary on Jan. 31, is the biggest of many recent additions by general manager Brian Burke, who is hoping to help the Leafs reach the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

“My view of the organization since I got here has been that we didn’t want to win badly enough,” Burke said. “We’ve turned that group over, we think we have a group that wants to win and will pay the price to win, and we’ll find out starting on Thursday if I’m right or not.”

Phil Kessel scored 30 goals last season after Burke acquired him from Boston, and Jean-Sebastien Giguere enters this season as the top goalie after arriving via trade from Anaheim on Jan. 31.

The Leafs’ most significant trade this summer netted them left wing Kris Versteeg, who contributed 14 points during Chicago’s Stanley Cup run. Coach Ron Wilson has been using Versteeg on the top line with Kessel and 24-year-old center Tyler Bozak, who had 27 points in 37 games as a rookie last season.

Toronto also retained standout defenseman Tomas Kaberle, who had been the subject of trade rumors as he enters the final year of his contract.

The Leafs will be especially eager for a good start after losing their first eight games last fall, with their lone point in that stretch coming in a 4-3 overtime loss to Montreal in the opener.

Watch Philadelphia Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins Live HD Streaming Online

After a playoff run that exceeded all expectations, the Philadelphia Flyers are hungry to finish what they started.

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ postseason was a major disappointment, but the Flyers’ Atlantic Division rivals are excited for their own new beginning.

The Flyers begin the defense of their surprising Eastern Conference crown Thursday night by helping open Pittsburgh’s Consol Energy Center, where Philadelphia hopes to end its recent woes within one of the NHL’s fiercest rivalries.

The Flyers (41-35-6) didn’t qualify for the playoffs until the final day of the regular season, but it turns out getting in was all they really needed. Seventh-seeded Philadelphia dispatched New Jersey in five games in the first round, then overcame a 3-0 series deficit against Boston in the conference semifinals - rallying from a 3-0 Game 7 deficit - to get to the East finals.

After cruising past Montreal in five games, the Flyers fell in six games to Chicago in the Stanley Cup finals - a disappointing end, but one that was still considered a remarkable accomplishment.

Philadelphia, which hasn’t finished higher than third in the Atlantic in the past four seasons, is anxious to end this season hoisting the Cup rather than watching it paraded around its own ice.

“We have to get back to where we were,” said forward Danny Briere, who led all playoff scorers with 30 points. “We were two wins away from our goal of bringing this city a Stanley Cup and that’s the goal again. I think we have every element in place for that to happen.”

The Penguins (47-28-7) believe the same, and they’re no strangers to playing for hockey’s ultimate prize. Pittsburgh lost in six games to Detroit in the 2008 Stanley Cup final, then knocked off the Red Wings in seven in 2009.

The fourth-seeded Penguins were the East’s highest remaining seed in the second round this spring, but were stunned in a 5-2, Game 7 loss to Montreal, closing Mellon Arena with a thud.

That hasn’t quelled optimism in Pittsburgh.

For the first time since their inception in 1967, the Penguins have a new home - and judging by the preseason, one that’s already providing an edge. Pittsburgh outscored opponents 12-3 in winning all three games at Consol Energy Center, which sits across the street from Mellon.

“We just want to go out and make this our home and make it a home-ice advantage,” coach Dan Bylsma said. “I can’t wait to see this building full and energized and make it difficult for opponents to come into.”

The Flyers have had difficulty wherever they’ve faced the Penguins recently. Pittsburgh is 9-3-0 against its in-state rivals over the past two seasons.

Sidney Crosby, who tied for the NHL lead with 51 goals last season, is certainly looking forward to the opener. He recorded eight goals and 11 assists in those 12 contests.

“Both teams are always at their best when we play each other - I think that’s to be expected,” Crosby said. “And throw in the fact that it’s the first game of the season and the first game here at the arena, so it should be exciting and there should be no shortage of motivation.”

The Penguins will be missing Jordan Staal, their third dynamic center behind Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, for perhaps a few months as the Selke Trophy finalist recovers from a foot infection.

The team’s biggest offseason changes came at the blue line. The loss of power-play quarterback Sergei Gonchar was met with the signing of Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek, who should combine with Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang to give Pittsburgh a formidable top four on defense.

Coach Peter Laviolette probably isn’t nearly as confident in the Flyers’ ability to control their own end. Goaltender Michael Leighton, who helped carry the team to the Cup finals after taking over in the second round for Brian Boucher, is expected to miss two weeks with a back injury, leaving Boucher as the starter.

Defenseman Chris Pronger has been a question mark all preseason as he recovers from offseason knee surgery. He’s rarely practiced in the days leading up to the opener, but is expected to join new additions Andrej Meszaros, Sean O’Donnell and Matt Walker in Laviolette’s defensive pairings Thursday.

Flyers forward Jeff Carter, the league’s sixth-leading goal scorer over the past two seasons with 79, has nine goals and seven assists in his last 11 games versus Pittsburgh. WATCH LIVE ONLINE Give it a try >>> Watch Live Online

Watch Calgary Flames at Edmonton Oilers Live HD Streaming Online

The Battle of Alberta - one of hockey's fiercest rivalries - gives hockey fans a special treat on Opening Night as the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers square off at Rexall Place. Both teams are looking to bounce back from dreadful seasons as the Flames finished in 10th place in the Western Conference, whereas the Oilers finished dead last in the entire NHL. WIth welcome additions via free agency and the entry draft, both clubs are looking to get back to respectability and gain a spot in the ultra competitive Western Conference playoffs.

Considered one of the league's biggest disappointments from a season ago, the Calgary Flames will look to bounce back this season after finishing 2009-2010 as the league's worst offensive team, scoring fewer goals than anyone else in the NHL. A shakeup at the trade deadline which saw the Flames get rid of cornerstone defenceman Dion Phaneuf in exchange for a couple of middle of the pack forwards and a bucket of pucks was unable to propel the Flames into the postseason, and are hoping the long offseason gave their marquee players some time to think. Team captain Jarome Iginla was among those who struggled last season who went on a few multi game scoreless droughts, which as the main source of income doesn't bode well for the Flames win-loss record. Calgary made a push during free agency and reacquired both Alex Tanguay and Olli Jokinen who will look to give Iginla some socring help. Furthermore, the Flames are hoping Niklas Hagman can return to Leafs and Stars form and provide a balanced secondary attack with the likes of Daymond Langkow, Ales Kotalik, and Rene Bourque also chipping in. At the back end, Jay Bouwmeester, Mark Girodano, Robyn Regehr, and Ian White will lead the way as they try to keep opposing offense at bay and out of Miikka Kiprusoff's face. If the Flames offense can live up to its potential it will inevitably alleviate the pressure placed on the Flames defense and goaltending which should allow the entire team to play better as a unit. Calgary was a playoff calibre team last year that fell 5 points short of a plaoff berth because they simply couldn't score enough goals when it mattered.

From one trainwreck to another last season, Alberta's other hockey power was anything from that a season ago finishing with the worst record by a whopping 14 points. The Oil were 33 points out of a playoff spot, and were essentially doormats for the entire duration of the season. Edmonton was plagued with injuries as their starting goaltender in Nikolai Khabibulin, and best player in Ales Hemsky both succumbed to early, season ending injuries which left the Oilers and their fans incredibly deflated. By midseason, the Oilers were already looking ahead to next year and as the season rolled along the talks of the first overall selection in the 2010 entry draft became the focal point. Edmonton received that pick and selected decorated junior phenom Taylor Hall from the Windsor Spitfires who will look to make an immediate impact in this game. WIth a number of roster and personnel changes going on in Oil Country, the new look Oilers will still have a lot of work to do to get back to the postseason but they're definitely on the right track. Fellow rookie prospects Jordan Eberle and Magnus Paajarvi who had a stellar preseason have also cracked the roster to go along with a healthy Ales Hemsky and Dustin Penner who had a pretty solid campaign last year. Rounding out the Oilers attack includes veteran Shawn Horcoff, youngsters Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano, Gilbert Brule and Colin Fraser, and tough guys Zach Stortini and Steve MacIntyre. With the balance of speed and finesse up front Edmonton will be exciting to watch and should be able to stay competitive on most nights. Defensively, the Oilers are a bit thin beyond their top 4 consisting of Kurtis Foster, Ladislav Smid, Ryan Whitney, and Tom Gilbert but if those 4 can play up to par and Khabibulin can hold his own then this team will be much improved from a season ago.

This game will definitely be electric as a number of players are making their NHL debuts, and with the history these two teams have you can bet both teams will look to gain fortunes at the other team's expense Thursday night. Regardless of positioning these two teams always play each other tough and this one shouldn't be any different. A season ago these two teams opened up in Edmonton and the Flames came away with a 3-2 victory after Oilers goaltender literall threw the game away by coughing up the puck in his own end as he tried to stickhandle. Without that flub the Oilers would have won that game, and with that image surely to be fresh in his mind I am expecting Khabibulin to play a little smarter this time around. With the hype surrounding Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi and the rest of the Oilers I am expecting them to thrive in the season opener. If Calgary can withstand the mayhem that is surely to happen in the first 10 minutes then the Oilers could be in trouble. If not, I like the Oilers to come out flying and their rookie sensations to make an immediate difference in this game. Edmonton takes the opener. Watch Carolina Hurricanes at Minnesota Wild Live HD Streaming Online

The 2010-2011 NHL Hockey season kicks off in Europe for the second consecutive season as the Carolina Hurricanes and Minnesota Wild lock horns in Helsinki, Finland on Thursday afternoon. Both clubs will look to build on disappointing seasons from a year ago and get back to respectability by clinching a playoff berth this season.
The Carolina Hurricanes entered the 2009-2010 season as an Eastern Conference contender after their surprising run to the Eastern Conference finals the year before. However, the Canes stumbled out of the gates and for the better part of the season were the worst team in hockey which effectively extinguished any hope of a return to the postseason. Barred by injuries and a lack of chemistry that went missing in the offseason, the Canes were poised to draft 1st overall for the majority of the campaign until a late surge in the last quarter of the season saw Carolina finish 11th in the Eastern Conference. Luckily for Carolina they have a decent combination of young and old on their roster, and they have a healthy Cam Ward this season, so they should be able to return to form and make a push towards the bottom 4 playoff positions in the wide open Eastern Conference. With the likes of Eric Cole, Eric Staal, and Jussi Jokinen leading the charge up front, and veterans Joe Corvo, and Joni Pitkanen anchoring the defense the Hurricanes should be competitive most nights and won't be a doormat like they were a season ago. The Canes also have some young talent up front as they acquired Patrick O'Sullvan from the Edmonton Oilers to go along with Brandon Sutter and Jiri Tlusty who will be called upon for secondary scoring behind Cole and Staal. If the top 6 of the Canes can stay healthy they should be able to score some goals and alleviate some of the pressure on Cam Ward between the pipes.
The Minnesota Wild finished 11 points out of a playoff spot last season despite finishing 2 games above the .500 mark and having one of the best goaltending tandems in the NHL. Playing in the ultra-competitive Northwest Division has been the Achilles heel for the Wild as they always seem to possess enough talent to be a consistent postseason team, but can never find that competitive edge over the likes of the Canucks, Avalanche, and Flames. The only team the Wild dominate on a consistent basis is the Edmonton Oilers who even when were loaded with talent were always unable to beat the Wild. Minnesota will look to change its divisonal fortunes this season and make a charge at the postseason. Luckily for the Wild they have a plethora of talent up front and have finally picked up a decent second line center in Matt Cullen who will be paired with Guillaume Latendresse, and Martin Havlat. The top line to start the season for the Wild has Mikko Koivu, fresh off a career year centering Andrew Brunette and Antii Miettinen who will be called upon to drag the Wild out of the basement with regards to overall offensive production. The Wild also possess the likes of Pierre-Marc Bouchard who will look to have a bounce year, role player John Madden fresh off a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks, and Kyle Brodziak who is an emerging young talent. Defensively, the Wild are as strong as ever with Brent Burns and Marek Zidlicky on the blueline, as well as Cam Barker and Nick Schultz. WIth Nicklas Backstrom between the pipes it will be difficult to put up alot of goals on this Wild team, the only problem is whether or not they can score enough goals to give Backstrom and the backend some breathing room.
The first week or so of the NHL season is a bit of a crapshoot as teams take some time to get their feet moving, and we don't really see the contenders and pretenders until a little bit later into the season. Furthermore, with this game being played in Helsinki it will take a while for the teams to get settled and start playing into their respective systems. Of the 4 games that were played overseas last season, 3 of those games went over the total and two of them were decided in a shootout. With the goaltenders and defensive systems involved in this one however I am laying off the total. In terms of overall top to bottom talent and who will be able to shake off the cobwebs quicker I give the nod to the "home" team. Minnesota takes the season opener.
